Firefighters Battle Blaze In Extreme Cold

Fighting a fire on the coldest day of the year.

That’s was the agenda today for the St. Stephen and Calais Fire Departments.

St. Stephen Fire Chief Jeff Richardson says they recieved a call to Downey Ford shortly before noon. Temperatures were near -18*C (0*F) with an extreme cold warning with wind chills of -35*C.

He tells us the fire started in the wall at the back of the building, climbed up the wall, and burned into the floor assembly.

Richardson says there will be structural damage, but it’s mostly cosmetic.

There is no word yet on the cause of the fire.
