A former Saint John city solicitor has been appointed as a sitting provincial court judge in Miramichi.
The appointment of Scott Brittain fills a vacancy and brings the number of full-time provincial court judges to 23.
“During his career, Mr. Brittain has made an important contribution to the legal community of New Brunswick,” Justice Minister Ted Flemming said in a news release.
“We are confident his expertise and professionalism will serve him well in his new role.”
Brittain obtained his law degree from the University of New Brunswick, was called to the bar in 2004, and earned his master of law from the University of Cambridge in 2005. He earned the Queen’s counsel designation in 2018.
He began his career with Stewart McKelvey in Saint John in 2004 before becoming a solicitor for the City of Saint John in 2007.
Brittain worked in that role for more than 13 years before spending the past year as a senior solicitor with NB Power. He has also been a part-time instructor with the Faculty of Law at UNB.
He has served as president of the Saint John Law Society, the Canadian Bar Association’s New Brunswick branch, and the Law Society of New Brunswick.
In addition to 23 full-time provincial court judges, which include the chief judge and the associate chief judge, there are nine supernumerary judges and three per diem judges.
