Former High School Teacher Sentenced To 3.5 Years In Sexual Exploitation Case

A former teacher at Kennebecasis Valley high school has been sentenced to a total of three and a half years behind bars for sexual exploitation of two young people dating back to 2007, to which he plead guilty.

34-year-old Ryan Hachey of Rothesay was taken into custody during a setencing hearing at the Court of Queen’s Bench. While he did not speak at this hearing, the court heard that he has expressed remorse for what he’s done.

When he was 26, Hachey was a youth leader in the church that he and one of the victims attended and was also a high school teacher at the time, though not that victim’s teacher. There were approximately 10 sexual encounters between the two and, the court heard, Hachey told him not to tell anyone as he would go to jail.

The second victim was Hachey’s student and Hachey was a friend of the student’s mother and their sexual relationship ended when the victim left for university. The person did provide a victim impact statement and the court heard that the victim has since developed depression and anxiety.

Justice Thomas Christie called Hachey’s guilty pleas a significant mitigating factor, however:

“[His] actions deserve to be denounced in the strongest terms possible,” Justice Christie said. “There needs to be a message of deterrence.”

Hachey received two separate sentences one for each of the victims with the first being one and half years of incarceration and the other 2 years, to be served consecutively.

He also has to submit to DNA testing and company with the sex offender registry for 20 years.
