Fort McMurray: Wildfire destroys 1,600 Homes, More Communities Evacuated

The situation remains very tense in Fort McMurray and surrounding communities in northern Alberta.

The Alberta government has declared a state of emergency and Fort Mac remains under a mandatory evacuation order.

The latest figures indicate roughly 1,600 homes have been destroyed.

A boil water advisory has been issued for the entire region.

Meantime, communities on the outskirts of Fort McMurray had to leave late last night because of changing weather conditions.

Facebook has launched its recently created “Safety Check” which allows people to let their friends know if they are in a safe location during natural disasters and emergency situations.

The wildifre situation truly turned into an international story yesterday, when Queen Elizabeth II issued a statement.

She says The Royal Family is shocked and saddened by the news of the wildfires causing so much devastation.

More than 250 firefighters are working to contain the wildfires in northern Alberta.
