In the Majors, the Blue Jays won their 11th straight, 4-2 over Oakland to maintain a half game lead over the New York Yankees who outscored Cleveland 8-6. The Yankees and Blue Jays begin a three game series tonight in Toronto and all three games are sell outs. Mark Buerhle won his 13th game of the season yesterday and David Price starts tonight.
In the National League, Pittsburgh scored 7 runs in the 1st inning and hung on for a 10-5 win over St. Louis to move 6 back of the Cardinals in the Central Division. The New York Mets increased their lead over Washington in the East to 4 and a half games with a 12-3 win over Colorado.
In New Brunswick Senior baseball, the Saint John Alpines finished their regular season with a 6-1 loss to the Moncton FisherCats. Ron Barton hit a solo shot for the Alpines to break the shutout. The playoffs begin later this month.
First overall pick Joe Veleno, who’s just 15, had a goal and assist and Ian Smallwood added a goal and two assists as the Sea Dogs shut out the Acadie-Bathurst Titan 5-0 to open up the preseason.
