A vote will take place at the annual meeting of Hockey New Brunswick which gets underway today to determine the future of co-ed hockey teams in the province.
The motion claims, that female players should be playing girls hockey and an all girls program should be established instead. The President of the Moncton Minor Hockey Association Brian Gaudet says getting rid of co-ed hockey will make it more difficult for girls to play hockey, especially in the smaller communities.
He also notes many of the smaller communities rely on the female membership to make up sufficient members in specific age categories. He warns If they are mandated if play elsewhere, smaller community teams will ultimately fail because they won’t have sufficient numbers.
