Group Home Workers Vote For Strike Action

Residential care workers at Independence Plus Group Homes in Saint John have voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action.

CUPE says members had been bargaining for improved wages and working conditions since May of 2018.

The workers provide assisted living services, nutrition and cleaning services for adults with intellectual or physical disabilities.

In a news release, local CUPE president Rose Galbraith says the job isn’t easy and wages are too low, with workers being paid $15 an hour.

She goes on to say most workers at the home work two jobs to make ends meet.

Galbraith hopes negotiations with social development and the employer can continue.
