Homestay Families Needed To House International Students

If you’re interested in learning about other cultures and have a spare room or two in your home, the New Brunswick International Student Program wants to hear from you.

They’re looking for homestay families to welcome international students into their lives for the upcoming school year or parts of it.

About 700 students from 18 countries came last year, and program manager Bruce MacDonald tells us they’re still in need of families for this year.

“[We have] 500 applicants for September of this coming year,” says MacDonald. “We’ve got 75 to 80 per cent of those students already placed in homes. Right now, we still probably have 25 to 30 students that we need to place for September.”

MacDonald says there’s a stipend that goes with it and they have 25 program coordinators checking in on the students and families to see how things are going.

He says you can benefit from having an international student join your home and a lot of host families have indicated that to them.

“They’re bringing these international kids into their home because they feel that it helps their own children learn a little more about a different culture, different language,” says MacDonald.
