How To Protect Yourself From Tax Scams

It’s tax season and that means it’s also scam season for fraudsters.

The Canada Revenue Agency is reminding you that if you receive an email, phone call, or text message claiming to be from them that seems suspicious and is asking for more personal information including your credit card number or social insurance number then you’re dealing with a scam.

“I want you to keep in mind that the CRA would never ask individuals to provide this personal information, we would never ask someone to pay with prepaid credit cards or gift cards and we certainly would not threaten anyone with jail time,” says CRA spokesperson Desmond Arsenault.

Now when it comes to what you should do if you believe you are the victim of a tax scam:

“If you believe that you’ve divulged any personal or financial information we ask that you immediately contact the RCMP to advise them of the situation,” says Arsenault.
