Idea Of NB Museum Expanding Onto Riverview Park Met With Opposition

A petition and letters being sent to Common Council opposing the idea of the New Brunswick Museum expanding onto a portion of Riverview Park due to the park’s historical significance.

The province is asking the city for permission to dig test pits and bore holes to see if an expansion in the area would work which City Manager Pat Woods says is part of a larger effort to find better accomodations for the collections located on Douglas Avenue.

Riverview Park is listed in the Canadian Register of Historic Places for its use as a memorial to those who served in the Boer War and Councillor John MacKenzie raised questions about what the Criminal Code of Canada says regarding disrespectful acts of a memorial or a cenotaph.

Councillor Bill Farren calling for that request to be tabled until more information is gathered by staff which council passed.

Back in August the province announced a $1.1-million investment towards the museum’s Collections Centre on Douglas Avenue.
