The cause of the fire at the provincial jail in Shediac has been determined to be improper or accidental disposal of smokers’ material.
The investigation by the Office of the Fire Marshal showed several cigarette butts near the fire’s point of origin under the ramp section from the access door leading to the roof area.
The fire extended into the wall assembly and roof components.
All active and passive fire safety devices functioned as they should have, according to the report.
The centre is 100% non smoking and Justice and Public Safety Minister Denis Landry says they are investigating.
