Lobster Fishermen Adopting New Conservation Measures

To ensure the long term sustainability of the lobster fishery along the Northumberland Strait, harvesters are adopting new conservation measures.

Maritime Fishermen’s Union spokesperson Christian Brun says harvesters will be leaving smaller lobsters in the water to develop more and will be favouring larger crustaceans instead.

“It also happens that when harvesters catch their lobster, if they are a bit larger they get a better price for them and there is more meat to use for products,” he notes.

The fall fishery in what is known as Area 25 of the Northumberland Strait began earlier this week and many harvesters say their early catches have been lower than expected.
