Saint John Airport is looking for the city’s support in securing federal funding for much needed upgrades. They include a thousand foot extension to the airport runway and navigation improvements for low visibility and when it’s foggy.
As one of six National Airport System airports across the country located on federal land but serving less than 625 thousand passengers a year, Saint John Airport has long been ineligible for federal funding programs.
C-E-O Derrick Stafford says the airport is also seeking to persuade businesses to set up shop on airport owned land.
Mayor Don Darling is urging Common Council to voice its support, saying the airport is responsible for more than 570 direct and indirect jobs and injects more than $68 million into the local economy each year.
