Million Dollar Endowment To Support Mount Allison Music Department

A new one million dollar endowment to the Mount Allison University Music Department is going to help students excel.

The Bragg Women Music Opportunities Fund will support student performance programs and touring ensembles, enhance music technology as well as bring in guest artists and performers.

Students will have increased chances to perform on campus, as well as both nationally and internationally through programs such as the Centre for Opera Studies in Italy, the Orford Arts Centre, and the National Youth Band of Canada.

The improvements to the Music Technology Lab will allow students to learn and experiment with composition and recording technology.

Kevin Morse, acting head of the department of Music at Mount A says “this kind of exposure helps better prepare our students for careers in music and related fields.”

The donation will also help regularly bring an “artist in residence” of national or international stature to campus to work directly with students and faculty.

John Bragg announced the endowment this past week in honour of five women in his family who contributed to music education: Zillah Bragg, Sylvia Bragg, Kathleen (Bragg) Sherman, Carolyn (Bragg) Glennie, and Lorraine (Bragg) Moore.

2017 marks a full century since the first Bachelor of Music graduate (Mary Elsinore “Elsie” Tait in 1917) from Mount Allison.
