Team New Brunswick enjoyed its best ever performance at the Canada Summer Games winning a record 24 medals. New Brunswick also was second in the Centennial Cup which is awarded to the provincial or territorial team that shows the greatest improvement between games. Quadruple medalist Brooklyn Douthwright of Riverview served as the flag bearer for New Brunswick at the closing ceremonies in Winnipeg. Douthwright won a pair of silver and a pair of bronze medals in the pool during the second week of the games.
In the Majors, Rafael Devers hit a homer off Aroldis Chapman to tie the game in the ninth inning and Andrew Benintendi singled home the go ahead run in the 10th as the Boston Red Sox edged the New York Yankees 3-2. Chris Sale started the game for Boston and struck out 12. The Red Sox now lead the Yankees in the American League East by 5 and a half games……Josh Donaldson, Justin Smoak and Darwin Barney hit homers as the Toronto Blue Jays beat Pittsburgh 7-1.
In the National League Central, the Chicago Cubs took a one game lead over St. Louis after winning 7-2 over Arizona…..The Cardinals lost to Atlanta and former Blue Jay R-A Dickey, 6-3 to snap their 8 game winning streak. In other play, it was San Francisco 4 Washington 2 and in the second game, Washington 6 San Francisco 2…..Cleveland 4 Tampa Bay 3…..Miami 5 Colorado 3…..Minnesota 6 Detroit 4…..NY Mets 6 Philadelphia 2….Milwaukee 7 Cincinnati 4…Kansas City 14 Chicago White Sox 6…..Houston 2 Texas 1……Oakland 9 Baltimore 3……Los Angeles Angels 4 Seattle 2 and Los Angeles Dodgers 6 San Diego 4.
Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals suffered a significant bone bruise in his left knee after slipping on a wet base but avoided the kind of ligament or tendon damage that would have put him on the shelf for a long time. There’s no definitive timeline for Harper to return but the Nationals hope he will be back in the lineup before the end of the season.
The Saint John Alpines split a doubleheader with Chatham in the New Brunswick Senior Baseball League. In the first game, Chatham won 3-1 and in the second, Jack Shannon hit a 2 run homer in the 9th inning to give the Alpines a 6-4 win.
Matthew McNeil won the men’s division at Marathon by the Sea in a time of just over an hour and 22 minutes. Charlotte Mawer finished first among the women in a time of an hour and 23 minutes.
Justin Thomas won the P-G-A championship, his first major, by 2 shots.
