Monday Morning Sports For August 31st

In the Majors, Jake Arrieta of the Chicago Cubs threw a no hitter, striking out 12 and walking only one batter in a 2-0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers……..The Toronto Blue Jays retained their 1 and a half game lead over the Yankees in the American League East after a 9-2 win over Detroit. Edwin Encarnacion homered for the fourth time in two days and Josh Donaldson also hit a home run……The Yankees romped over Atlanta 20-6 and the Red Sox lost to the New York Mets 5-4.

At the Little League World Series, Japan rallied from 8 runs down to win the championship 18-11 over a team from Lewisberry, Pennsylvania.

25-year-old Derek Drouin from Corunna, Ontario wins gold in the high jump at the world track and field championships.

In the CFL, Ottawa over winless Saskatchewan 35-13.

Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from the U.S. Open tennis championship because of a lingering right leg injury.
