More Frequent Rest And Water Breaks For Construction Workers In Extreme Heat

It has been a tough few days for construction workers, with the heat.

Temperatures have soard, with highs in the upper 20’s, and the Humidex hitting around 35 degrees celsius.

Extreme heat can take its toll.

According to Richard Blais, who is with WorkSafeNB, they use the what is called the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature index to measure workplace conditions. This method closely relates to the human body’s response to heat.

“Employers are required to make sure that employees build in rests within their work cycle, based on these temperatures,” says Blais.

“There’s no high or low per say, but a lot of it has to do with what you measure, and the type of work being carried out. If it is heavy work , then there should be more rest breaks and water breaks would be what they need to put into place.”

Blais says employers also need to ensure their employees are aware of the symptoms of conditions related to heat, and if they begin experiencing them, they should act on them immediately.
