The New Brunswick Federation of Labour is asking the province to halt what they’re calling wage suppression legislation until they are consulted.
The budget speech states the government would introduce changes to binding interest arbitration and arbitrators have often given wage increases to employees that were beyond what municipalities could pay.
NBFL president Patrick Colford says they want to sit down and meet with provincial ministers and try to find a solution to what they are proposing.
“Because quite frankly in our eyes they are trying to find a solution and trying to legislate a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist,” says Colford.
The NBFL believes this would ultimately result in downward pressure on wages of all workers in New Brunswick.
