There’s no indication when it will finish but a new commission is in place to study shale gas exploration and recommend whether it should be allowed in the province.
The commission is headed by the former Chief Justice of the Court of Queen’s Bench, Guy Richard. The other members are Cheryl Robertson who was in charge of the New Brunswick Community College a few years ago and the former President of U-N-B, John McLaughlin.
Energy Minister Donald Arsenault says the moratorium on shale gas will remain in place until there is clear and credible information the effect of fracking on public health and the environment.
Arsenault adds there will also have to be a plan on how waste water from hydraulic fracturing will be properly disposed of.
