New Housing Popping Up In Priority Neighbourhoods

There is a tremendous need for all types of housing in Saint John.

Two new condo-style apartment buildings are open on Waterloo Street next to the Cathedral.

Randy Hatfield of the Human Development Council tells CHSJ News he is happy to see the investment in the Waterloo Village but he says filling the void in housing is a big job.

He describes affordable housing as an incredibly expensive and complex file to work on that requires multi-jurisdictional co-operation.

He says there is not a lot of money around adding New Brunswick has the highest percentage of its labour force earning minimum wage.

Six new affordable housing units just opened in the North end. That project comes with a rent subsidy where the tenants pay based on their income.
