Not Enough Money To Go Around As City Grapples With New Budget

Common Council will be holding a special budget meeting Saturday morning to go over the nuts and bolts of several budgets including transit, police and the fire department.

Common Councillor David Merrithew, who chairs the Finance Committee, says the city finds itself on the horns of a dilemma as it tries to deal with inflationary pressures, including a wage increase of more than 4 per cent for city police officers, and not a whole lot more money to go around.

The growth in the city’s tax base is under one per cent but Merrithew sees that turning around a couple of years from now.

Merrithew adds all municipalities across the country are having a tough time financially.
