With heavy hearts, the family of Mark Slader, loving husband of Kathy (Hurlburt), announce his untimely passing, which occurred on Sunday, December 21, 2025, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born April 16, 1960, in Saint John, NB, he was a son of the late Edward “Ted” and Treva (Dobson) Slader.
Mark retired from his career of 37 years as a building inspector with the City of Saint John. He thrived in a multitude of career paths while employed with the City, and particularly enjoyed running the North End Community Centre, teaching building code courses, and mentoring teammates.
Mark and his wife enjoyed becoming snowbirds after retirement. Wintering in Florida, where he continued to help in the community. Mark and his wife enjoyed taking side trip adventures while traveling back and forth to their homes. Mark played a variety of sports; including, badminton, volleyball, rugby, basketball, football, track, and mens & co-ed softball. He later paid it forward and coached basketball and lacrosse. Mark loved the water, from building and sailing a boat with his father, which sparked his ambition to construct and fix things. He later enjoyed taking cruises with his wife every chance they got. As an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing, biking, going for hikes, kayaking, golfing, and family camping trips.
Mark was a jack of all trades and had a passion for helping others. He had a kind and gentle heart, and he always put other’s needs ahead of his own. He would often be seen with his wheelbarrow full of tools crossing the field heading to a neighbours to lend a hand with a project. Mark was very involved in his Christian church life, providing leadership in youth programs where children were most vulnerable. Mark served as church warden and participated on a variety of committees for the church and surrounding communities.
Mark was known for his love of tye-dye shirts, shorts, sandals, and his unwavering belief in the Habs.
Besides his loving wife of 36 years, Kathy, Mark is survived by his daughters: Caryn Gunter (Mark), Jennifer Russell (Peter), and Melissa Slader-Ehrenreich (Tyson); son, Sean Slader (Kaitlin Taylor); grandchildren: Allyson Gunter, Austin Gunter, and Kieran Russell; sister, Janet Brown (David); mother-in-law, Carol Hurlburt; and brothers-in-law, Rob Hurlburt and Graeme Leslie; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mark was predeceased by his parents; brother, Paul Slader; father-in-law, Earl Hurlburt; and sister-in-law, Kim Leslie.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (506-634-7424), where visitation will take place on Sunday, December 28, 2025, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm. A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 29, 2025, at 11 am from Stone Church, 87 Carleton Street. Interment will take place at a later date.
