November 3, 1951 – May 20, 2026
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Hilding Andreas Höken Olsson, CD, of Saint John NB who passed away peacefully at the age of 74. Born in Saint John, he was the only child of the late Stig Anders Carl Olsson and Irene Margaret (Bartell) and is survived by many cousins.
Hilding dedicated a significant part of his life to serving Canada as a proud member of the Royal Canadian Navy. Hilding was known coast to coast as a sailor’s sailor working on the upper decks of nearly every class of ship above the water line. During his 37 years of military service, Hilding demonstrated unwavering commitment, courage, and professionalism, earning the respect and admiration of fellow sailors and all who had the privilege of serving alongside him.
Throughout his naval career, Hilding demonstrated his keen eye for capturing amazing photographs. There were very few ports of call that he was not slinging his camera equipment over his shoulder as he crossed the gangway to capture the local culture on film. While stationed in Halifax he was commissioned as the lead photographer of many jazz festivals catching the ‘vibe’ and musical talent over successive years.
In Hilding’s early years, he was an avid outdoorsman and took every opportunity to get back to the farm in Hampstead. He was known for his quiet demeanour, always being early for everything and personal qualities such as kindness, integrity, humor and touched the lives of many through his friendship, and dedication to family. Above all, Hilding was a devoted friend. He cherished time spent with shipmates and friends playing cribbage, listening to 100’s of jazz albums – all kept in pristine playing condition – creating countless memories that will be treasured forever.
A heartfelt gratitude to the healthcare professionals and caregivers at Loch Lomond Village, Willow House who provided compassionate care during Hilding’s stay.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Hilding’s life will be held on Thursday, July 9, 2026 at HMCS Brunswicker 1 Navy Way Saint John NB at 1300h with a reception to follow. Interment will take place alongside his father and mother at Fernhill Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a veterans’ organization, Canadian Cancer Society or charity of the family’s choice in Hilding’s memory.
Fair winds and following seas, Hilding. Your service, sacrifice, and legacy will never be forgotten.
