May 16, 1944 – April 14, 2026
Captain Robert Eric “Bob” Harrity passed away peacefully on April 14, 2026, at the home he loved, surrounded by family, after a courageous battle with illness. He was 81.
Born on May 16, 1944, Bob lived a full and energetic life centered on family, community, sport, and the water. A lifelong resident of Saint John, New Brunswick, he was deeply connected to the places and people he cherished most—none more so than his beloved Ragged Point, which brought him joy, friendship, and a true sense of home.
Bob dedicated more than five decades to sailing, racing, and the marine industry. A longtime member of the Royal Kennebeccasis Yacht Club (RKYC), he was a devoted volunteer who participated in nearly every club event. He proudly served as Commodore from 1989 to 1990, and in 2025 he was named Honorary Commodore in recognition of his lifelong dedication and service. Sailing was far more than a pastime for Bob—it was a passion that shaped his entrepreneurial career, forged lasting friendships, and inspired countless adventures. Bob and his wife Shirley were also recently honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award from SailNB for their outstanding contributions to sailing in New Brunswick.
Beyond the water, Bob was a devoted community supporter and avid sports fan. He rarely missed a Saint John Sea Dogs game and proudly held season tickets for many years. He also served on the Sea Dogs Foundation and supported youth and community initiatives close to his heart.
Athletics and competition were woven into Bob’s spirit. In his younger years, he was a dedicated athlete, particularly in rugby, running, and hockey. He continued playing and coaching hockey well into his seventies and even took part in a European hockey tour in 2006. A passionate sports fan, he also enjoyed attending NASCAR events, playing golf and spending time hunting with “the boys” in Wickham.
As a husband, father, and grandfather, Bob found great joy in being his children’s and grandchildren’s biggest supporter—cheering from the stands, sponsoring their teams, and happily driving them to practices, games, and events. He was always there with encouragement, admiration, and unwavering support.
Bob loved travelling to the sunny south and abroad, treasuring shared moments with loved ones and savoring the simple joys of life, especially Shirley’s cooking.
Those closest to him will fondly remember his gift for giving nicknames. If you were part of his inner circle, you likely carried one for a lifetime—a warm expression of his affection, humour, and connection. His friends were a vital and cherished part of his life.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Shirley (Jagoe) Harrity; his son, Jason Harrity (Lisa); his daughter, Jana Kirkpatrick (Bradley); his cherished grandchildren, Emily and Erica Harrity, Grady and Kieran Kirkpatrick; and his great-grandson, Noah Harrity.
He is also survived by his sisters, Dawn Bishop (née Baird) and Vicki Gregory (née Baird); his brothers-in-law, Harold Jagoe (Stephanie), Ellis Jagoe (Karen), and Boyd Jagoe (Laraine) and their families. Connecting with his sisters later in life brought him deep gratitude and meaning. His Shaw cousins held a special place in his life and were like brothers to him.
Bob was predeceased by his birth mother, Eileen Baird (née Moore); his mother, Rhoda Harrity (née Dykeman); his father, Gordon Harrity; his stepmother, Dorothy Harrity (née MacQuarrie); and his aunts, Phyllis Tebo (née Harrity) and Alberta Mowry (née Harrity).
Bob will be remembered for his loyalty, generosity, competitive spirit, and deep love for family and community. His presence will be deeply missed, but his stories, laughter, and memories will live on in all who knew him.
The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to friends and family for their unwavering care and support, in particular Graeme Scott, Hup Clark, Dr. Hari Ondiveeran, and Dr. Kathy Keith.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424). At Bob’s request, a Celebration of Life will be held at the RKYC at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to the Sea Dogs Foundation, P.R.O. Kids, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
