It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Vernetta (Nettie) Florence Straight of Saint John, on 07 Jan 2026, at the age of 87. Born on May 1, 1938, in Poodiac, New Brunswick. Nettie was the daughter of the late Harland and Maryann (Molly) Mallory, and the wife of the late James (Jimmy) Douglas Straight.
Nettie and Jimmy were married for 56 years before his passing. Their lives are reflected through their focus on immediate and extended family members. Nettie will be dearly missed by her children, Brian Straight (Vicky Fillmore), Dianna Miller (Robert), William Straight (Leanne), Judy Straight-Griggs (David), Andrew Straight, her daughter-in-law Cecelia Straight and honorary daughter/sons Bonnie and Reggie (Sarah) Straight and James Mallory. Nettie was blessed with 12 grandchildren: Christopher (Jana), Craig and Kelly Miller; Leah and Krista Straight (Kyle), Melanie King (Shaun), Chad Straight (Tabitha), Laura Chase (Roy), Timothy (Sarah), Jaret and Claire (Mitchell) Griggs, and Alesha Straight; and 14 great grandchildren: Leeanna, Lylah, Avery and Harper Miller, Talon Mason, Lennon and Marley Ketchum, London and Isabell O’Neill; Brian, and Lily Straight, Madison Griggs, and Isiah and Ivory Straight; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Nettie is survived by her sisters, Doreen, Barb and brothers Andy (Cathy) and Billy Mallory and sister-in-law Sandra Straight. She is predeceased by her sisters Addie Daw, Linda (Peter) Hughes, Josephine (Bernerd) O’Neil and Terry (Cecil) Mallory and bothers, Ottie, Bunny, and Lester Mallory. Special mention to Kim and Karen Mallory for their dedication to mom’s wellness during her illness.
Arrangements under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424). A Funeral Service will be held at Brenan’s Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 11:00 AM, with Reception to follow at Brenan’s.
