Pennfield Man Charged With Attempted Murder To Undergo Psychiatric Assessment

A man charged in an attack on a woman in Pennfield has been ordered to undergo a 30-day mental health assessment at the Restigouche hospital facility in Campbellton.

65-year-old Brian Harold Smith of Pennfield is facing charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault stemming from an incident on April 21 where RCMP stopped an attack in progress on a woman in her late fifties.

Judge Henrik Tonning said that an earlier, in-jail assessment shows that while Smith is fit to stand trial, according to a doctor, there is a possibility that he may not be criminally responsible and more work needs to be done.

Smith is scheduled to return to provincial court on June 23 at 1:30pm.
