A grade 11 student from Bernice MacNaughton High is heading to Ottawa next month, to once again compete at the Canadian Geographic Challenge finals.
James Cogswell is one of two students from New Brunswick chosen to take part.
This is the third and final year James Cogswell will be able to compete.
Twenty students from across the country will compete to be Canada’s top Geography student.
Cogswell says some of the questions they face have a bit of a twist, and it takes more than just a basic knowledge of geography. Cogswell says, “We could face a question like, why is is that in the Middle East, there wouldn”t be as many pig farms? To know the answer, you would have to know that, the Middle East is like Islam and they don’t eat pork. You would have the know several different aspects to answer questions like that.”
He is aiming to place is the top three this year, “But I think that this year, even if I got only fourth or fifth, would be pretty good, because all of the top five competitors win a research cruise around Atlantic Canada, so that’s pretty cool,” Cogswell notes.
The Challenge is being held June 3rd to 5th.
He has this advice for up and coming students who are hoping to compete in future years, “Basically, just practice, practice practice.”
Holden O’Donnell of Fredericton is the other student chosen to compete.
