Saint John Police warning about a scam in which a person who’s buying or renting from you writes you a cheque for more than the agreed-upon amount. You’re asked to deposit the cheque and wire the excess funds immediately back to the sender. Then the scammer returns the deposited cheque as counterfeit and it’s charged back to your account.
To avoid this scam, know who you are dealing with; independently confirm your buyer’s personal details, never accept a cheque for more than your selling price, and never agree to wire back funds. If you accept payment by cheque, ask for a cheque drawn on a local bank so you can see if it’s legit.
