Province Kicks In Cash For Train Station Renovation

The historic train station in St. Stephen getting financial help from the province.

The government is investing $100 thousand dollars into the $370 thousand dollar renovation project, in order to get the building ready for Picaroons and the 5 Kings Brew Pub.

Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister John Ames says the building is full of history, and has been a main focal point for the community for close to a century.

“It was built in 1929 as a Canadian Pacific Railway Station, and served the community for 31 years until the last train departed for McAdam, back on April 14th, 1960.” Ames says in 1971, the Town of St. Stephen aquired the building and opened it as the St. Croix Public Library. In recent years, the building has served as the Visitor Information Centre.

Funding for the renovation through the Regional Development Corporation will go towards roofing, heating, utilities, and leasehold improvements.

The estimated opening date for the two businesses is late September.
