A recent report from the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation should be a warning to women.
The findings show that although women do have fewer strokes than men, they are more likely to die from them or suffer worse disabilities because of a stroke.
Charlene Comrie is with the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation and says there are three times in a woman’s life when she is most vulnerable to having a stroke,
“When she is pregnant, three times as many pregnant women have a stroke as a non-pregnant woman at the same age. A woman who is just past menopause is at increased risk for stroke and elderly women are at highest risk for profound strokes,” says Comrie.
High blood pressure is also something that should be closely monitored according to the Foundation.
“Sometimes we feel those flutters in our chest when our heart is beating irregularly you need to pay attention to that. Smoking, using hormone replacement therapy and being on oral contraceptives, those are particularly high-risk factors for women,” says Comrie.
