Retail Industry Not Happy About NB February Holiday

Not everyone is happy about the fact the New Brunswick is getting another statutory holiday in February.

Jim Cormier is the Atlantic director of the Retail Council of Canada.

He says businesses understand the positive impact that comes from providing adequate life/work balance to their employees, but stat holidays end up costing them money.

“When government creates a new holiday. The businesses, they are the ones that have to pay for this vacation day, and there is no means to recoup any of the costs.”

Cormier adds because retail is one of the most competitive industries in the economy, they are always looking at the bottom line.

He says as the province continues to deal with the significant economic challenges it is having, this is not the time to be increasing the cost of doing business in New Brunswick.
