Rothesay Residents At Risk Of Sewage Backups

Residents in Rothesay are at risk of toilet backups, as rising floodwaters have impacted the town’s sewage pumping stations.

They’re being advised to call a plumber to seal the toilets on the lower levels of their homes.

Mayor Nancy Grant says this is something the town had to deal with last year as well.

“It’s exactly the same situation as last year. Our sewage system is overwhelmed. People living in the flooded areas, if there’s water in your yard, you’re certainly at risk of toilet backup,” she said in an interview.

Grant says they’ve provided portable toilets to those in vulnerable and affected areas. She is also asking residents all over town to limit the amount of water they put into the system.

“If they can, avoid using dishwashers and other pressurized machines. That might help,” she said.

Grant says they are still waiting to hear word about their applications for provincial and federal funding for a new sewage treatment plant, something they;ve been wanting for a few years.

Flood levels in Rothesay are expected to reach 5.7 metres on Friday.
