Saint John Marks Transgender Day of Remembrance

Attitudes are slowly changing – but many in the GLBTQ community and beyond agree there’s still some way to go before all sexual orientations and lifestyles are accepted in small, traditionally conservative cities like Saint John.

Taylor Bisnette is organizing Saint John’s observance of the Transgender Day of Remembrance on Thursday. Bisnette tells CHSJ News acknowledging someone’s preferred gender is a matter of basic respect–and it’s no more difficult to call someone by their preferred name and pronouns than it is to use a nickname.

Further, Bisnette says there have been several cases within the past few years of people being assaulted and harassed in Saint John because they idenitify as transgender.

Friends and allies of the LBTQ community are all welcome at the event, which starts at 6:30 Thursday in King Square and will feature personal stories and a candlelight walk down King Street. It will conclude with a moment of silence in the Boardwalk area, and hot chocolate provided by AIDS Saint John.
