The latest news about the number of North American Atlantic salmon is not good with a population decline in 2016 amid fears the numbers could drop again in 2017.
The Atlantic Salmon Federation has released a report showing total estimated North American returns for 2016 were off by 27 per cent from 2015.
Atlantic salmon that return to spawn after only one year at sea saw the greatest decrease at 31 per cent below 2015.
Greenland reports a significant drop in the number of Atlantic salmon caught last year.
The North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization meets in Sweden next week to discuss measures to protect the species.
