Nathan Noel and Spencer Smallman both scoring for Saint John but they and the rest of the team couldn’t hold off the Charlottetown Islanders who defeated the Sea Dogs 4-2 in Q-league action at the Eastlink Centre. This is now the fourth straight loss for Saint John, which is trailing the Maritimes-Division leading Moncton Wildcats by 16 points.
At the Canada Winter Games in Prince George, B.C., New Brunswick getting its first ever medal in ringette, a bronze, after defeating Quebec 7-6. The first week of competition has wrapped up and Quebec leads the way with 83 medals. New Brunswick, however, has bragging rights in the Maritime provinces with seven medals while Nova Scotia has one and PEI has yet to win a medal.
In the NHL, Eric and Jordan Staal each scored lifting Carolina to a 2-1 win over Toronto. Also, Minnesota shutout Edmonton 4-nothing, Anaheim doubled Calgary 6-3 and Vancouver fell 4-2 to New Jersey.
A great way to comeback from the NBA all-star break for the Toronto Raptors. They hammered the Atlanta Hawks 105-80.
Manitoba’s Jennifer Jones clinched a spot in the finals at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. Her curling team defeated Alberta’s Val Sweeting 8-6 in the 1-2 page playoff last night. Sweeting goes to the semi-finals, where she awaits the winner of this morning’s matchup between team Canada and Saskatchewan.
