The Safe Harbour shelter on Broad Street, which provides emergency and transitional housing to homeless and at-risk youth, is shuttering on Friday because of a lack of funding.
Social Development Minister with the province Cathy Rogers says that every youth has been housed and are working with social workers with her department, “they’re being case-planned and they’re part of the youth engagement services program so we are looking after them making sure their needs are met. That’s of course the first priority.”
Rogers says in 2014 they made an offer of a capital investment as part of a shelter investment program and that offer is still on the table, however, they can’t release the funding until they know that Safe Harbour is a financially viable and sustainable operation.
She spoke with Kit Hickey of the shelter’s board of directors on Wednesday.
The shelter has been open for less than a year.
