Supporters Rally Outside Jelly Bean Houses In Hopes Of Saving Them

A group of supporters stood outside the Jelly Bean houses in hopes of saving the buildings some claim to be historic.

Janelle Russell organized the show of support and calls the situation dire because of the demolition date that’s scheduled before May 1st.

Russell says everyone she’s spoken to would at least like the facades of the building to remain intact.

She says it’s not only the Jelly Bean Houses being demolished, it’s Union Street and the Synagogue all within the same area.

Russell says her father showed interest in the buildings years ago and wanted to renovate them, but was never given the opportunity despite reaching out to the city with emails and phone calls.

Debates have surrounded the future of the buildings, which survived the Great Fire of 1877, for the better part of a decade.

The New Brunswick Non-Profit Housing Association have purchased the buildings and Russell questions why, at the very least, the facades of the building can not be kept.

An online petition has over 600 signatures so far: bit.ly/2n7fGll
