Sydney Street Courthouse Could Have New Life

The Saint John Theatre Company has its eyes on expanding to the Sydney Street Courthouse after outgrowing its current premises on Princess Street.

The theatre company sees the Sydney Street Courthouse property as a possible location for what it calls The Atlantic Repertory Company, a new professional residency program for the benefit of recent university graduates.

The theatre company first is asking for $18 thousand from the city to help pay for half of the design and engineering review of the property. Funding for the other half comes from the Regional Development Corporation.

The New Brunswick Historical Society suggested the courthouse might be used as the new City Hall but, in the end, just wants the building saved from demolition regardless of what purpose it’s used for, calling it a moral and legal obligation on the part of Common Council.
