Because the last day of April fell on a Sunday, today is the deadline for filing your income tax return.
Ann Marie Jenkins of the Canada Revenue Agency says last minute filers can go online to send their returns in and there are also are voulunteers who can help you out free of charge if you have a modest income and simple return. You can find out where these people are located by going online to cra.gc.ca/volunteer.
Jenkins warns if you don’t file an income tax return, you won’t be able to derive any government benefits.
She adds if you owe the government money but don’t have it to pay, you should still file on time to avoid late penalties which amount to 5 per cent of what you owe plus 1 per cent each month the return is late.
