Tax Increase In Saint Andrews

The mayor of Saint Andrews says the town will continue to address its infrastructure deficit in 2019.

Council increased the property tax rate by three cents to $1.24 as part of its $4.7-million operating budget.

Mayor Doug Naish said he believes it is a fair balance between addressing their challenges and the costs to taxpayers.

“Our asset management plan indicates that we have over $14 million of infrastructure work to do over the next five years,” Naish said.

Naish said since property taxes account for most of their revenue, they need to place a focus on population growth and economic development.

“The end game for Saint Andrews is greater self-sufficiency and federal/provincial partnerships for major infrastructure renewal,” he said.

Some of the town’s priorities for 2019 include completing its new municipal plan, continuing capital work, and choosing a location for a new medical centre.
