The Day Princess Diana and Prince Charles Visited Saint John

There are moments in Saint John’s history that stand out—and one of those was the day Princess Diana and Prince Charles came to visit. It was a day filled with excitement, pride, and a bit of maritime drama.

At the time, I was working on the Princess of Acadia ferry while attending university. That day, we found ourselves in a unique situation: we had to ground the Princess of Acadia on the west side of the harbour while waiting for three important vessels to arrive—the HMS Britannia, a Canadian warship, and a cargo ship. The harbour was bustling with anticipation, and the logistics were complex.

To safely manage the grounding and prepare for the incoming ships, we had to wait for higher tides, shift the ballast, and coordinate with three tugboats. It was a delicate operation, and one that highlighted the skill and coordination of our local maritime crews. The harbour was alive with movement, and the energy of the royal visit added to the sense of occasion.

Simultaneously, the city was buzzing with excitement. Crowds gathered to catch a glimpse of the royal couple, and the streets were filled with pride. Princess Diana’s presence brought a sense of warmth and elegance, and her visit left a lasting impression on Saint John.

Looking back, it wasn’t just a royal visit—it was a moment that showcased the strength of our port, the dedication of our workers, and the spirit of our city. It was a day when Saint John stood tall, welcoming royalty while managing the tides and traffic of a busy harbour.
