The RCMP Labour Code Trial Begins In Moncton

Today was the beginning of the long delayed RCMP trial in relation to alleged labour code violations surrounding the June 4th shootings.

The charges say the RCMP failed to provide sufficient training, equipment and supervision to their members which put them at risk in active shooter situations.

In his opening statement, Crown prosecutor Paul Adams said despite 2011 approval for a carbine rollout, by 2014 there were none of those weapons in the Codiac Detachment.

He added prior to 2014, RCMP training did not include responding to active shooter situations in open environments, but instead focused on closed areas.

Adams says officers were unfamiliar with their body armour, and many didn’t even know it was in their cruiser.

He finished his statement by saying it was a pronounced failure by the RCMP to support their officers.

The trial resumes tomorrow morning at 9:30 as the Crown calls their first witness.
