Transport Canada Fines Two More Vessels For Violating Speed Limit In Gulf Of St. Lawrence

Transport Canada is levying fines against two more vessels for violating a speed restriction in place in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

The Crown Princess and MV EM KEA are each facing a $6,000 fine for exceeding a 10 knot speed limit.

They have 30 days to pay or appeal.

The speed limit was imposed back in early August in order to protect endangered North Atlantic Right Whales.

Since then, at least five ships have been fined, including a Coast Guard vessel.

16 Right Whales have died so far this year in Canadian and American waters, with the remaining population estimated at less than 500 animals.
