At the Canada Games, Team New Brunswick’s Cam Crowell, Daniel Gallagher and Ryan Small, opened the canoe kayak event. Crowell placed second in the men’s K-1 500-metre consolation final while Gallagher and Small finished third in the K-2 1,000-metre consolation final. Three new provincial records were established at the Pam Am pool. Fredericton’s Jacob Gallant set a new record in the men’s 800-metre freestyle and both the women’s and men’s 4×200-metre freestyle relay squads set new records.
Don Baylor, the 1979 American League Most Valuable Player has died of cancer at the age of 68. He spent 19 years in the Majors, including a stint with the Boston Red Sox, and hit 338 homers. He was also named manager of the Year in the National League with the Colorado Rockies in 1995.
In the Majors, Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels got the one thousandth hit of his career but Manny Machado hit a grand slammer to give Baltimore a 6-2 win…..The Chicago Cubs increased their lead in the National League Central Division to a game and a half over Milwaukee after a 5-3 win over San Francisco while the Brewers lost to Minnesota 5-4……Max Scherzer was back on the mound after suffering neck spasms and pitched 7 innings while Bryce Harper hit the 150th homer of his career in Washington’s 3-2 win over Miami. In other play, it was Pittsburgh 3 Detroit 0…..Cincinnati 11 San Diego 3 and St. Louis 11 Kansas City 3.
The New York Knicks of the NBA are hiring Craig Robinson, brother-in-law of former President Barack Obama, for a job in their front office with player development. Robinson was the head coach at Oregon State from 2008 to 2014.
