Provincial Conservative leader Blaine Higgs warns the provincial debt will continue to rise. He points out Premier Brian Gallant’s government has added $2.4 billion dollars to the province’s debt since coming to power and that figure will rise to $3 billion with all the spending commitments.
Gallant says Higgs won’t talk about his record as finance minister for good reason since the economy contracted and the provincial deficit was a lot higher than it is now.
He says Higgs tried to cut his way to prosperity and the approach didn’t work.
The Opposition Conservatives are warning the rising provincial debt will prove to be disastrous for New Brunswick if interest rates start to increase.
