Although a mild winter is in the forecast for the Maritimes, the cold air can still pack a punch.
Joan Richardson is the Shelter Manager of the SPCA in Saint John, she says there are a number of things to keep in mind when taking your pet outside.
Richardson says when owners take their dogs out, just do it long enough to use the bathroom.
She says as a rule of thumb, if it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for your dog.
Richardson says if you have an outdoor cat you should keep them inside because of the wind chill and how dangerous it can be.
She says if a stray cat is hanging around your house, call the SPCA and they’ll take it if they have room but in the meantime provide shelter for the night if at all possible.
Richardson reminds pet owners to check your animals paws when they come back inside to ensure no salt, sand or other substances like anti-freeze are on them, which can be toxic.
