You will notice something a bit different the next time you park at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Saint John.
The city has installed six new pay-by-plate machines as it begins to gradually replace all of the old pay-and-display units.
Marc Dionne, operations director at the Saint John Parking Commission, says the big difference is you will no longer have to place a receipt on your dashboard.
“The user will go up to the machine, input their licence plate, and then pay for however much time they want to pay for,” says Dionne.
Parking officers will be able to scan the plate using their handheld devices to see how much time is left
Six new Pay by Plate Parking Machines will be set up at St. Joes Hospital on July 25th 2018. No need to put your receipt in your vehicle; simply put in your plate, pay for your time and keep receipt with you. Here is an example: https://t.co/ooDBjFnmev

Dionne says the payment options will stay the same and they even plan on adding debit next year.
Another 11 machines are on order for this year and Dionne says they will be placed in high-traffic areas, perhaps along King Street or around King’s Square, but what will become of the old machines?
“The idea is that we’re going to redeploy them to areas where we don’t have machines that are working today,” says Dionne, “we’re going to keep a stock on hand for parts that we don’t have today for our old machines, and some of the machines will eventually be decommissioned.”
