Provincial Unemployment Rate Is Up

The unemployment rate in New Brunswick rose last month from 8.4 to 8.7 per cent. Opposition leader Blaine Higgs is questioning where all the promised jobs are with increased taxation and what he calls unprecendented government spending.

Premier Brian Gallant says his government’s expenditures will benefit the province in the long run. He points to education as an example and also notes the deficit has been cut in half. Gallant adds when Higgs was provincial finance minister, the provincial economy retracted which proves his argument that you can’t cut your way to prosperity.

The unemployment rate in Saint John went down from 6.7 per cent in March to 6.2 per cent in April. Moncton saw a drop from 8 per cent in March to 6.9 per cent in April.

Job growth natyionally was flat. The unemployment rate went down to 6.5 per cent because fewer young people were out looking for work.
