Residents Asked To Keep Cats Inside, Leash Dogs Following Rabies Vaccine Aerial Drop

It’s hoped that Charlotte County will see a drop in rabies cases in a few months time now that the vaccine aerial drop has been completed.

That’s according to Elaine Bell of the Department of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries who says they’re asking residents to keep cats inside and dogs on leashes until next Friday. She says that’s so that wild animals can get to the bait first, noting that the baits themselves aren’t dangerous for your four-legged friend.

Bell also stressing the importance of making sure your pets are vaccinated for rabies and that their vaccinations are up to date.

Since May of 2014 they’ve had 21 confirmed cases of rabies among racoons and skunks in the Charlotte County area. The province is investing 600-thousand-dollars to implement the rabies control program this year.

She says they also conducted an aerial drop back in 2008, however, the last time there was a case of rabies before 2014 was in 2002 so the 2008 bait drop was more of a preventative measure.
