Skye Elizabeth Harvey pleaded guilty to causing the deaths of 13 cats in a crate that was found behind a house on Ready Street on the west side in August of last year. Only one survived.

The court was told the Harveys had 18 cats in their apartment and the landlord didn’t want any.

Harvey was given a sentence of 6 months to be served in the community with conditions including counselling followed by a year’s probation.

She has also been prohibited from having animals or even living in a residence with animals for 10 years.

Members of Rescue Meow in Saint John were not happy with the sentence and left the courthouse chanting animal abuse is wrong.

Sheriff’s officers asked for calm outside the courtroom when there was a bit of a confrontation between a family member and members of Rescue Meow, one of whom is Michelle Colleen Parker.

She has they help cats every day of their lives adding a girl recently called them and they were able to help her.

The court was told the Harveys had 40 cats in another place where they lived before being evicted.
